Sophia Buhbut PhD student of Prof. Arie Zaban, Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan.
Dissertation topic: FRET mechanism based on nanomaterials in dye-sensitized solar cells: synthesis, characterization and applications.
 Sophia started her B.Sc. in 2004, and finished her studies in Chemistry (Focus: pharmaceutical chemistry), at Bar-Ilan University.  In 2009 she finished her M.Sc., cum laude, at Bar-Ilan University. Sophia's research focused on photo-voltaic cells. Then immediately she started an integrated track toward the Ph.D. Scientific insights and intellectual breakthroughs that came from Sophia's research led to improvements of dye sensitized solar cell (DSSCs). A patent with Sophia was written and published in USA Prov Application.
Sophia's PhD work on development of new DSSCs that integrates Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process, in her research she developed structures for DSSCs that separate the process of absorbing light from that of carrying electrical charge, aiming for more stable devices. The research uses colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) that channel absorbed light to the charge separating dye molecule. By separating the two processes, the QDs are not an active part of the charge carrying process and therefore do not dissipate light energy as heat. The result is a DSSC structure that can offer better efficiencies.
