Prof. Arie Zaban

Arie Zaban was born in Israel in 1961. He earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry (summa cum laude) and a Ph.D. in Electrochemistry (with highest distinction) at Bar-Ilan University (1987-1995). After a 2 year postdoctoral stint at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Denver, CO), he was appointed to the senior faculty at Bar-Ilan (1998), where he is currently a Full Professor of Chemistry. For seven years he was the Director of the Bar Ilan Institute for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials.

Prof. Zaban has published over 140 papers in refereed journals, 3 book chapters, and 60 invited lectures. He has 10 patents out of which 7 are commercialized in three start-up companies. All papers and patents are energy related (photovoltaics, batteries, materials for energy conversion and storage). Prof. Zaban was a member of the Israeli government advisory committee on alternative fuels and vice chair of the Israeli Solar Energy Solution consortium (Magnet Program). Prof. Zaban has been awarded several prizes and fellowships such as the Israel Chemical Society Prize for Outstanding Young Scientist, a Rothschild Fellowship, a Levi Eshkol Scholarship,  the Michael Landau Research Prize in Renewable Energy  the IVS Research Excellence Prize ICS Prize of Excellence .

His research interests are in the fields of materials science for sustainable world, with a focus on renewable energy resources. Recent achievements concentrate on: (i) All-oxide photovoltaics (ii) mechanisms in ferroelectric based solar cell e.g. perovskites, (iii) built in QD antennas for photovoltaics, (iv) high conductivity transparent electrodes for optoelectronics, and (v) high energy density metal-air batteries..

Prof. Zaban is involved in various energy education programs oriented towards high school, undergraduate and graduate students.
