Prof. Arie Zaban

Prof. Arie Zaban was inaugurated President of Bar-Ilan University in October 2017. Previously he served as Vice President for Research and as the founding Director of the Bar-Ilan Institute for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials.

He earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry (summa cum laude) and a Ph.D. in Electrochemistry (with highest distinction) at Bar-Ilan University (1987-1995). After a 2 year postdoctoral stint at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Denver, CO), he was appointed to the senior faculty at Bar-Ilan (1998), where he is currently a Full Professor of Chemistry.

Prof. Zaban has published over 180 papers in refereed journals (h-index=67), 5 book chapters, and 75 invited lectures. He has 13 patents out of which 7 are commercialized in 5 start-up companies. All papers and patents are energy related (photovoltaics, batteries, materials for energy conversion and storage).

Prof. Zaban has been a member of the Israel National Council for Research and Development, of the National Academic Renewable Energy Steering Committee, and of the Israeli Government Advisory Committee on Alternative Fuels. He has earnered several prizes, among them the ICS Prize for Outstanding Young Scientist, the Michael Landau Research Prize in Renewable Energy, the IVS Research Excellence Prize and the Israel Chemical Society Prize of Excellence, the Kolthoff Prize from the Technion.

His research interests are in the fields of materials science for sustainable world, with a focus on renewable energy resources. Recent achievements concentrate on: (i) All-oxide photovoltaics (ii) mechanisms in ferroelectric based solar cell e.g. perovskites, (iii) built in QD antennas for photovoltaics, (iv) high conductivity transparent electrodes for optoelectronics, and (v) high energy density metal-air batteries..

Prof. Zaban is involved in various energy education programs oriented towards high school, undergraduate and graduate students.
